This month's coach pick is always smiling, always works hard, is making incredible improvements since she first came to us, plus she has a really cute puppy (Sky!!) Meet Kylie, May's's Purgee of the Month!
Where are you from? What brought you to Tucson?
Petaluma, California. That's an hour north of SF, home to dairy farms and chickens, Lagunitas IPA, and my entire family! I moved to Tucson 2 years ago, when I was accepted into the fabulous medical school program at the U of A.
How long have you been a CrossFitter, and why did you start?
I've been a CrossFitter for 1.5 years. I had been curious about CrossFit, since people who do it seem to really love it. I wanted an effective, healthy way to deal with the extra stress in medical school, and be strong and healthy. All of that seemed like reason enough to check out Purgatory, but then I convinced my friends, Kathryn and Jessika to join. They helped me to commit to it, and after our first workout, we were hooked!
Which movement is your favorite?
Squats. I struggled to do squats correctly over my first year, but now I can do it and it’s something I’m able to well. Next up: pull-ups!
How have you improved the most?
I am much more fit in terms of cardiovascular, flexibility, and strength. I am more confident and I have muscles I've never seen before! LOL
If you were stuck on a desert island, and could only have one food forever, what would it be?
This is probably typical, but avocados! Mint chocolate chip ice cream and really good, fresh bread were close runner-ups.
What do you love about being at CrossFit Purgatory?
I love the community at CF Purgatory. The coaches are so patient and helpful, when I have no clue what I am doing. Everyone is so kind and supportive. Everyone works so hard, but no one seems to take themselves too seriously, and we usually have a good laugh, which I love, even when it's at my expense! :D
What keeps you motivated?
I am a much happier, balanced, productive person on days I've made it to the gym. That feeling is all the motivation I need! I also tend to go with friends from school, and I got my partner, Cameron, to join us too, which definitely helps on tougher days.
If I'm not at the box, you can probably find me...
Hiking some place beautiful in Tucson, camping/ backpacking (when I can), studying at a local coffee shop, or hanging with our new dog Sky.
One interesting thing about yourself not related to CrossFit:
I speak Spanish and some Catalan. I lived in Barcelona for over a year, teaching English to kindergartners and studying language and culture. And I have a recently discovered hidden talent: while my reading skills may be lacking, I'm a very good lip-reader!
